THE GUY STONE AWARD: The award is presented to a deserving 39th Flight member who demonstrated service to the Flight and direction epitomized by Guy Stone’s performance to foster aviation and Eagle Flight. GUNTHER-HIEBERT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: The 39th Flight annually honors distinguished individuals who have demonstrated superior achievements in leadership, scholastics, and have a desire for a career in military aviation. Scholarships are given as incentives for members of the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) programs in Houston County, Georgia High Schools who: (1) have demonstrated the desire and potential to become a military pilot; and, (2) are attending an accredited four-year college or university or who have applied for and received admission approval from such college or university. An annual scholarship award of up to $2,000.00 is available from the Flight and, upon approval by the Daedalian Foundation, may be matched by an equal amount up to $2,000.00. The funds are distributed to the appropriate college or university in the recipient’s name. This scholarship is presented in honor and memory of fellow 39th Flight members Colonel Caroll D. Gunther and Captain Donald W. Hiebert who were lost on 11 April 1982 when their B-52 crashed during Red Flag exercises near Nellis AFB, NV. This award became the Flight’s principal scholarship award in 1982. JESSE E. TANNER, JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: The Daedalian Foundation established the Daedalian CAP Flight Scholarship Award in 1977. The 39th Flight created its award in 1979 in honor and memory of Jesse E. Tanner, Jr. who was active in the local CAP and died in 1978 in the line of duty as a Houston County, Georgia deputy sheriff. A $250.00 scholarship award is available to a deserving CAP cadet for flight instruction leading to a private pilot’s license.
